Academics Welcome Incoming Freshmen
The day before the open of the 2011-2012 academic year, UALR Chancellor Joel E. Anderson stood before a theatre-full of members of the freshmen class and pointed to members of the faculty – resplendent in academic regalia – who hold degrees from some of the finest institutions in the world.
“This faculty, during your time here, will provide you the opportunity for an outstanding education,” the chancellor said. “You have the responsibility to accept the challenges they will present to you. Make the most of your experience here.”
Anderson spoke at UALR’s first Freshmen Convocation, a solemn ceremony steeped in tradition, that welcomed and celebrated the new members of the academic community.
Dr. Logan Hampton, interim division chief for student development and dean of students, served as master of ceremonies, and was the first to deliver a message repeated by all the speakers: “We want you to know that we’re here for you.”
Dr. Darryl Rice, associate vice chancellor for student success, repeated another message: “We expect you to graduate.”
He recognized financial, societal, and parental pressure to find a course of study that will lead to a career and a job, but he urged them to find themselves during their time at UALR.
“Find your passion,” Rice said. “Find something you can really sink your teeth in, something that will motivate you all your life. Don’t bail at the sight of difficulty.”
“The next time you see these faculty members in their caps and gowns, you’ll be here also in your cap and gown at graduation.”
Following the convocation, the freshmen were invited to lunch at the Donaghey Student Center, where they were able to meet and eat with the professors in their colleges of interest.
