Members of the campus community are invited to add a favorite quote, poem, or other thoughts about racial and ethnic justice on a graffiti board on the upper concourse of the Donaghey Student Center Monday, Oct. 31, that will be displayed at an open house for UALR’s new Institute on Race and Ethnicity.

The Graffiti Board on Race and Ethnicity will be available for signing from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31. The board will be on display from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the open house for the new institute.

Live music, door prizes, refreshments, and presentations will be featured at the open house at the institute’s offices on the third floor of Administration North.

Chancellor Joel E. Anderson and Institute Director Adjoa A. Aiyetoro will speak at the event.

Anderson initiated creation of the institute last year with a mission to seek racial and ethnic justice in Arkansas by remembering and understanding the past, informing and engaging the present, and shaping and defining the future.

The chancellor said he envisions the institute will be a center for research, place for discussion and discourse, and sponsor of events aimed at fostering interaction within communities.

This summer, the institute sponsored events marking the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Riders, a cadre of young people – both black and white – who rode interstate buses through the South in 1961 to integrate bus terminal facilities, including the Trailways Bus Terminal in Little Rock.
