Bowen Hosts Forum on Cherokee Case

“Cherokee Freedmen v. Cherokee Nation: Race, Citizenship, and Sovereignty” will be the focus of a forum planned for 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, in the Friday Courtroom at the UALR William H. Bowen School of Law.

The forum will focus on the case involving the Cherokee Freedmen, descendants of slaves who also claim Cherokee roots. The Freedmen are challenging an August 2011 ruling by the Cherokee Supreme Court that revokes their citizenship from the Cherokee Nation, making them ineligible to vote in tribal elections or receive benefits.

Panelists for the event will be Professor Ken Gallant of the Bowen School of Law; Daniel Littlefield, director of the UALR Sequoyah National Research Center; Marilyn Vann, president of the Descendants of Freedman of the Five Civilized Tribes; and Stacy L. Leeds, dean of the University of Arkansas – Fayetteville School of Law and a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. Bowen Professor Terri Beiner will moderate the forum.

Sponsors for the forum are the City of Little Rock Racial and Cultural Diversity Commission, the Bowen Black Law Students Association, and the UALR William H. Bowen School of Law.
