Anthro Students Discuss Project to Recreate Prehistoric House
A group of experimental and archaeology students will present a program on “Building a Community One House at a Time” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Toltec Mounds State Park.
Dr. Krista Lewis, UALR assistant professor of anthropology, and Dr. Elizabeth Horton, station archaeologist at the Arkansas Archeological Survey at Toltec Mounds Research Station, will join in the presentation which will explain the goals and progress of an experimental archaeology project to construct a replica prehistoric Native American Woodland period house.
Participants also will learn about other student experimental projects that explore prehistoric lifeways in Arkansas.
“We will have have displays of a mechanical atlatl throwing device, studies to test the strength of fibers, arrow and ceramic making, mock ups of thatching, presentation of the progress on the house, and more,” Lewis said.
