Former Adjunct Writes About Deaf Girl’s Journey
Former UALR adjunct instructor Barbara Northup recently published a book – “Aura’s Journey” – about a deaf Honduran girl with no language and no education who was brought to Arkansas at age 11 to enroll in the Arkansas School for the Deaf.
Northup, who has a long history with the Interpreter Education Program at UALR, tells the story of Aura de Rivas, who lived with the Northup family while attending ASD. She would return to Honduras during the summers.
After graduating from ASD, de Rivas returned to her country permanently to teach in a school for deaf children. She is now married and has a daughter.
