Children International Campers to Sell Wares

Kindergarten through fifth grade students in the UALR Children International’s Mind Your Own Business summer camp will sell handmade products they have developed and produced during the summer from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, at the River Market’s Farmers’ Market.

Products include specialty coasters, corn jewelry, recycled bottle bracelets, wind chimes, magnets, keychains, and watercolor greeting cards.

Campers will donate all proceeds of the sale to the Make a Wish Foundation at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

The K-5th grade students from Bale, Franklin, Stephens, Wakefield, Watson, and Wilson elementary schools created their own business plans, learned about the importance of entrepreneurship, and discovered how to create and manage a business. Each grade chose its own products to sell.

The unique Mind Your Own Business camp helps working parents by providing a free, enriching, and safe environment for their children 10 hours of the day. The children get to learn new skills and have fun, said UALR Children International Elementary Education Manager Kristin Koenigsfest.

“We help families by providing free services,” she said. “Children have access to our free dental clinic, and they get free breakfasts, lunches, and snacks. We have the kids from 7:30 or 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Parents know where their children are and can trust that they are safe and not at home by themselves, sitting around during the summer, or engaging in any potentially harmful activities.”

Students also work on literacy and math skills and attend numerous field trips throughout the duration of the camp. Field trips include a trip to the movies, Wild River Country, and Pinnacle Mountain State Park.
