Kindergarten through fifth grade students will sell handcrafted products they’ve created during Children International’s Mind Your Own Business Summer Camp from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, at the Farmer’s Market, located at the Little Rock River Market.

Products at the sale will include pinwheels, greeting cards, jewelry, and coasters. All proceeds will benefit Arkansas Children’s Hospital Cancer Research.

The free Mind Your Own Business camp in which 150 elementary students participate began June 10 and concludes July 3. Hosted at Wakefield Elementary, it offers fun, hands-on educational opportunities to keep children learning in the summer.

The focus involves lessons tied to the Arkansas Department of Education’s benchmarks in reading, math, and art. A business curriculum provides students an opportunity to apply basic math concepts and skills to real-world situations while developing problem solving, creative and critical-thinking skills. Students also learn life, leadership and entrepreneurial skills and how to become active participants in their future success.

The camp also helps foster positive self-images in their art and ability to communicate. This includes learning about ethics and public speaking. In learning about selling, teams of students select and name their product, design a business plan, and create a marketing plan — activities requiring students to work together and include math and reading lessons. In the end, they learn how to give back by donating all the proceeds to a nonprofit organization.

This is the 10th year UALR Children International has offered the summer camp, which also provides on-site dental care to campers.
