Bowen School now Institute for Law Teaching and Learning co-sponsor

The UALR William H. Bowen School of Law has partnered with Gonzaga University School of Law and Washburn University School of Law to become the third co-sponsor of the Institute for Law Teaching and Learning.

Founded in 1991, the Institute for Law Teaching and Learning provides law schools resources and leadership to help create a learning environment that promotes student achievement at high academic levels and preparation as effective, moral attorneys. Specifically, the institute provides guidance in the areas of teaching and learning, assessment, and curriculum design.

ProfessorKellyProfessor Kelly Terry will serve as one of the institute’s co-directors, taking the place of new Bowen School Dean Michael Hunter Schwartz, who will continue to work on institute projects as a consultant.

“Professor Terry is an accomplished teaching and learning scholar,” Schwartz said. “I am excited to discover how the institute will thrive under her stewardship.”

The institute has several goals:

  • to serve as a clearinghouse for ideas to improve the quality of education in law school
  • to support student-centered curriculum reform
  • to provide national leadership on effective teaching and learning in law school
  • to support research and the development of materials to enhance teaching and learning in law school
  • to establish and maintain a national reputation for quality programs, responsiveness to law teachers’ needs, and innovation in law teaching

The institute co-hosts annual teaching and learning conferences, including two each year for the past several years. It also publishes The Law Teacher, which provides information authored by professors representing dozens of law schools around the country.
