History professor brings Jesuit mission history to life with multimedia

Dr. Kristin Mann, assistant professor of history, is among the UALR faculty involved in a presentation on Bolivian Chiquitos missions funded by an Arkansas Humanities Council grant.

The fascinating and highly unusual project, called “The Baroque in Bolivia: The Jesuit Mission Story in Music, Words, and Images,” will feature music and photography highlighting the missions.jesuiticas16172813

The presentation is free and open to the public. It will be held at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 19, in the Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall at the University of Central Arkansas.

The program includes remarks by Dr. Mann on the history of the Jesuit missions in Bolivia. The Jesuits, a religious order of the Roman Catholic Church, work to promote social justice and ecumenical dialogue in hundreds of countries across the globe.

Former UALR faculty members Gary Cawood of the Department of Art and Leah Wilkinson of the Department of International and Second Language Studies have also assembled an exhibit of images of Jesuit missions for the program.

Short video clips of on-site musical and cultural activities in the Jesuit mission towns and live music by Arkansas and Bolivian vocal and instrumental musicians will also be featured.
