The UALR Surveying Team placed second out of 13 schools from across a four-state region during the 2014 American Society for Civil Engineers Deep South Student Conference in Memphis.

UALR’s second-place win came in their first year to compete as an official student chapter.

The team included Roland Csege, Bonesphore Nsengiyukuri, Guy Pardew, and team captain Abdulaziz Alrowili from the UALR Department of Construction Management and Civil and Construction Engineering.

UALR Adjunct Instructor Michael Kelly, director of surveys at the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department, served as team coach.

The students also participated in the Steel Bridge event and the “Mystery” event, which was not revealed until the students arrived in Memphis. Christian Brothers University hosted the 2014 Deep South Conference from March 27-29.

A total of 10 students and two faculty advisors from UALR attended the conference. The conference is set to be held at UALR in 2027.

The Deep South Conference is held annually to foster relations among the student chapters and clubs within Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

The main goal of the conference is to further technical, professional, and ethical knowledge as it relates to civil engineering by hosting annual competitions that allow students to apply the principles and concepts they have learned in their undergraduate studies.

The regional conferences include events such as Concrete Canoe, Steel Bridge, Surveying and Professional Paper/Presentation.
