Honor society inducts newest members at UALR

The UALR chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society held its 2014 Induction Ceremony on Saturday, May 3, in the Donaghey Student Center. UALR Chancellor Dr. Joel E. Anderson congratulated the newest members of the organization, which is the nation’s oldest, largest, and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi chapters are on more than 300 campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Dr. David R. Montague, chapter president, also welcomed the new initiates, while Dr. Jan L. Austin, chapter past president, provided historical background.   In 1960, a group of 18 Little Rock University students and faculty met to organize an honor society and were told the university could qualify but there would be an almost 10-year period to complete the process to establish a Phi Kappa Phi chapter. During this interim period, the Sword and Shield Society was formed, patterning itself after Phi Kappa Phi. In 1972, the state’s first chapter of Phi Kappa Phi was installed at UALR. The first initiates of Chapter 134 were the charter members of the Sword and Shield Society. Today there are more than 3,300 members of the UALR chapter. Newly elected officers are John Minton, student vice president, and Angela Parker, public relations officer. Dr. Sherry Rankins-Robertson was appointed as first department ambassador.
