UALR student earns AT&T War Memorial Scholarship for second time

For the second year in a row, a University of Arkansas at Little Rock undergraduate is the recipient of the $2,500 AT&T War Memorial Scholarship administered by Arkansas Community Foundation.

Lyons, 43, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, will be honored this fall at War Memorial Stadium/AT&T Field. In her essay, Lyons said one of the most important lessons she learned during her years in the military was discipline.

“When everything you do has the potential for causing other people to lose their life, you either step up to the plate or you go home,” she wrote in her essay.

Lyons, a professional and technical writing major, hopes to own her own business some day and to give other members of the military a chance at employment.

The scholarship honors Arkansas’ 25 Congressional Medal of Honor recipients and is awarded annually to a veteran of any military branch who will attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university in Arkansas.

AT&T established the scholarship at the Community Foundation in 2011 to support Arkansas veterans seeking higher education.

Because of her military service, Lyons has seen the world. But today, she is at home at UALR.

“UALR and Little Rock have been very good to me,” she said. “I love it here.”
