Driskill’s work published in top research journal

The Journal of Applied Communication Studies recently published an article by Dr. Gerald Driskill, UALR professor of speech communication, exploring a 2007 community forum in response to racial tensions in Little Rock.

Gerald-DriskellDriskill’s article,“A Dialectic Analysis of a Community Forum on Faith: The ‘Most Segregated’ or Separated Hour?,” addresses the irony in forum participants’ responses to the homogeneity-diversity dialectic in the famous phrase, “the most segregated hour in America is 11 a.m. on Sunday.”

“I was humbled and honored to have an article published in a top national journal this year,” said Driskill.

“The journal, with the applied focus, fits our university and department focus on application and community engagement. The article also flows from UALR’s commitment to improving race relations in the city.”

According to Driskill’s abstract, “homogeneity remains the norm in churches despite the ideal of diversity called for by leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr.”

The article provides insights for moving in the direction of the diversity ideal.
