Student presents and chapter receives $5,000 for engineering conference
Sarah Brown, president of the UALR of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), recently presented at the ASCE Arkansas Section Annual Conference in North Little Rock.
Brown is a senior in the UALR civil and construction engineering program and the Donaghey Scholars Program, the university’s honors program at UALR.
In addition, the ASCE Arkansas Section awarded $5,000 to the UALR chapter to encourage and support student participation in the Deep South Student Conference, which the University of Mississippi will host in March.
ASCE Arkansas Section President Bradley Clark, a geotechnical engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, presented the check.
The UALR Student Chapter of ASCE, chartered in November 2013, plans to participate in several competitions at the student conference, including the steel bridge and surveying competition.
During the previous Deep South Student Conference held in Memphis, UALR’s surveying team took second place in its first year of competition.
In August, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) approved UALR’s civil and construction engineering program. UALR offers the only ABET-accredited program in the world in both civil engineering and construction engineering. ABET accreditation demonstrates the program has met quality standards set by the civil and construction engineering profession.
