Professor among ‘15 Little Rock artists you should know’
UALR Assistant Professor Nickole Brown of the Department of English was recently featured in an Arkansas Times article titled “15 Little Rock artists you should know.”
The article referenced Brown’s widely acclaimed books of poems, which include her debut “Sister” along with “Fanny Says,” inspired by her grandmother and due out in April. “Fanny Says” is available for early orders from publisher BOA Editions, LTD.
According to Rebecca Gayle Howell, poetry editor of The Oxford American, who is quoted in the article, Brown’s grandmother “distills the whole of America into one woman: bawdy, loving, racist, battered, healed, and gorgeous with determination.”
Brown earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Vermont College of the Fine Arts and graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Louisville.
She also earned the distinction of studying English literature at Oxford University as an English Speaking Union Scholar and was the editorial assistant for the late Hunter S. Thompson.
Among her many awards are the 2010 Orlando Prize for Poetry from A Room of Her Own Foundation, a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship, and three Artist Enrichment Grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women.
