Student fundraiser for Alternative Spring Break volunteer trip

UALR Student Housing will be hosting its first Alternative Spring Break, a service and volunteer trip offered to all students.

To raise money for Alternative Spring Break, student leaders are hosting a Polar Bear Plunge, sponsored by the West Hall Council.

Each participant’s jar at the West Hall desk must reach $100 before the participant will be plunged into a tank of ice-cold water on Trojan Lane.

The event will have hot cocoa, coffee, refreshments, music, and more. The deadline to make a donation to the jars is also at 5 p.m. on Monday.

The Alternative Spring Break trip is in partnership with Break a Difference, a non-profit organization that seeks to strengthen leadership by encouraging innovation and empowering individuals within communities over spring break.

The students will be working with the Boys and Girls Club in Fort Worth, Texas, where they will help with sports, outdoor activities, and crafts, among many other activities, from March 22 through 28.

There will be multiple activities every day, and the students will be divided into different teams with other college students from across the country.

“It’s really exciting, and it’s special that we have students here at UALR that are willing to give up a week of spring break to go give back to others and do volunteer work,” said Leanna Payton, director of West Hall at UALR.

“Having the support of the faculty and staff, as well as other students on campus, is really encouraging.”
