Children International Offers New Summer Camps
For four weeks this summer, 28 sixth graders enrolled in UALR-Children International’s college prep students program will team up with professionals at AETN and Dr. John Burgin of UALR’s College of Education to learn the rudiments of film-making while enhancing their reading and writing skills.
At the “Lights, Camera, Action” Summer Institute, campers will read short stories and scripts, and create their own piece to develop into short plays. Students will serve as writers, performers, set designers, and videographers. Personnel from UALR’s EAST Lab and the the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance will provide acting workshops and technal assistance producing and editing videos.
The finished products will be presented from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 25, at UALR’s Dickenson Hall Auditorium.
A third UALR-CI Camp is offered to 25 CI students in grades nine to 12. LifeLinks Camp is a week-long opportunity to shadow professionals and learn about their careers in health, criminal justice, engineering, journalism and broadcasting, and non-profit management. Campers will also participate in life-skills workshops, afternoon field trips and a day shadowing UALR alumni.
In addition to the two new camps, UALR-CI will offer its popular “Mind Your Own Business” summer camp for 150 students in kindergarten through fifth grade enrolled in the enrichment program.
The day camp will operate from June 9 to July 3 at Wakefield Elementary. Guided by certified teachers, children will work in teams to design their own business; products will then be sold at the River Market with proceeds donated to a local nonprofit chosen by campers. This is the 12th year UALR-CI has operated the camp.
