Sequoyah Research Center Hosts 8th Symposium
UALR’s Sequoyah Research Center will host its eighth annual symposium Oct. 17 and 18, a major conference on American Indian topics and featuring tribal speakers and presenters from throughout North America.
This year’s event will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the American Native Press Archive of the SRC. Other events include presentations from various tribal members, a silent auction, and a lecture by J. W. Wiggins on his Native American Art Collection.
The Wiggins talk will be at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, in Donaghey Student Center Room B. It will focus on the pieces of contemporary American Indian art he has collected for the last 25 years. Wiggins, a chemistry professor and a former dean of UALR’s College of Science and Math, has presented talks on many of the works that are not housed at the J.W. Wiggins Gallery of Native American Art at UALR’s University Plaza. Cited as some of the major examples of tribal work, the pieces include paintings, watercolors, beadwork, and sculpture.
