Bowen School Co-sponsors Water Policy Conference

UALR’s William H. Bowen School of Law is partnering with the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture’s Public Policy Center to sponsor a symposium Nov. 7 on science and technology, water policy, and the law.

The one-day conference, titled H2Overdrawn, will be held at the C.A. Vines 4-H Center in Ferndale.

Scientists say the demand for fresh water around the globe is growing and is being pumped out of the ground faster than nature can replenish aquifers. Massive amounts of water are irrigating deserts and front lawns. They predict within the next 30 years, demand for clean, abundant water will outstrip supply.

Robert Abrams, professor of law at Florida A&M University, will deliver the keynote address on contemporary water planning in humid regions. Other participants include Dr. John Czarnecki, ground water specialist for the GSGS Arkansas Water Science Center; and Teresa Marks, director of the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality.

Professor Ken Gould, who teaches a water law course at the Bowen School, will discuss wetland jurisdiction determination. He is also helping to organize the conference. For more information, contact Gould at 501.324.9952.
