Students from Rwanda Mark 1994 Genocide
UALR students from Rwanda invite the campus and community to join them in a ceremony marking the 1994 genocide that killed 500,000 members of a minority tribe, thousands of moderates in the majority tribe, and wiped out the majority of Rwanda’s educated citizenry over a 100-day period.
The ceremony, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 9, in Dickinson Hall Auditorium, will include a screening of the film “Shooting Dogs,” a minute of silence for the victims, and testimonies.
The theme of the evening’s event is “Let us commemorate the Rwandan genocide of April 1994 while fighting against negativism and building our country.”
Bridge2Rwanda, a nonprofit effort co-founded by former Stephens Inc. investment banker Dale Dawson, was established to help the country rebuild its intellectual capital. Through the organization, UALR and several other Arkansas institutions of higher learning have contracted with the Rwandan government to enroll students in science, math, computer, and engineering programs.
