‘Sampler Day’ Offers Taste of Scholars Program

Top scholars from across Arkansas will be on UALR’s campus next month for the annual “Sampler Day,” giving the high schoolers a taste of what they can experience in the Donaghey Scholars Program.

UALR students interested in joining the academically-elite scholars program also are invited to join the activities, which include an opportunity for students to attend classes with current Donaghey Scholars and interact with faculty, staff, and alumni. To attend, email dsp@ualr.edu or call 501-569-3389.

The Donaghey Scholars Program, the top honors program at UALR, features an interdisciplinary core curriculum and a scholarship from $60,000 to $80,000, including tuition, fees, stipend, study abroad, and more.

This year’s event from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in the Legends Room at the Jack Stephens Center will feature a mini-academic fair to give the prospective scholars a look at the majors and programs UALR has to offer.

“‘Sampler Day’ has been an annual event for prospective Donaghey Scholars for years,” said Eileen Turan, program administrator. “This year, we’re adding a small-scale majors fair for representatives of academic disciplines to interact with these top students.”

The schedule for “Sampler Day” includes:

  • 8:30 a.m. — Check-in and breakfast
  • 9 a.m. — Welcome with Dr. Earl Ramsey, DSP director
  • 9:25 a.m. — Science and society class
  • 10:50 a.m. — Rhetoric and communication class
  • 12:15 p.m. — Lunch with an alumni speaker, followed by Q&A
