For the seventh consecutive summer, the UALR William H. Bowen School of Law has chosen 25 students from all over the United States – this year from a pool of 225 applicants – to participate in its Pre Law Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) program next month. The four-week program offers intensive study designed to introduce college sophomores and juniors to the rigors of law school and the legal profession.

The program is funded in part by a grant from the Law School Admission Council to increase law school enrollment of groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession.

The PLUS program utilizes a variety of methods to reach the program goals. Students will work in group and individualized settings to strengthen their law school applications and personal statements.  Students will also learn skills that are necessary to excel on the LSAT.  The program simulates law school interest by presenting substantive classes and teaching would-be law students how to brief cases, outline course material, and take law school examinations.

Students also have opportunities to interact with practicing attorneys in the area to learn about the life of a lawyer.

The program begins at an opening banquet for incoming PLUS students at 6 p.m. Monday, June 1, at the Coyne Dean’s Gallery at the law school. U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Lavenski R. Smith will deliver a keynote address.
