Children International Seeks UALR Students for AmeriCorp Positions
UALR Children International and the University District Partnership are launching a new service learning program offering University students opportunities to learn valuable skills and money for college while serving the community around the campus.
The program year begins Aug. 1, 2009. Jolie Busby, AmeriCorps program director for UALR Children International, said she is now accepting applications from UALR students seeking AmeriCorp positions for the 2009-2010 academic year.
“Locally, our AmeriCorps program will provide tutoring and after-school enrichment for elementary students, case management for middle and high school students, and outreach to youth in the University District neighborhoods,” Busby said. “Across the nation AmeriCorps members serve their community through education, environment, public safety, and other programs. Our members will have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children.”
The positions UALR students can seek carry different time commitments. The positions available include time commitments of 300, 450, 675, or 900 service hours during the school year.
“These positions will be very attractive to college students, as they provide hands-on experience in addition to the stipend and educational award,” Busby said.
For a 900-hour commitment, the AmeriCorps member will receive a living allowance of $7,650 and an education award of $2,362 at the end of their term of service.
For a 675-hour AmeriCorps position, members will receive a living allowance of $5,738 and an education award of $1,800. Most of the 450-hour AmeriCorps positions will receive a living allowance of $3,825 and an education award of $1,250.
The 300-hour positions will serve during the summer and those members will receive a $1,000 education award.
