UALRTeach assistant director Michelle Brand Buchanan and master teacher Kelly S. Chaney were chosen to serve on two advisory boards for the National Science Teacher’s Association. Their three-year terms begin in June.

Buchanan will serve on the Science Matters advisory board while Chaney will be on the advisory board for Science Scope, a magazine focused on the practice of teaching elementary science.

Both were chosen from a nationwide pool of highly qualified science teachers, scientists, and science professionals.

Buchanan, a licensed secondary Arkansas science educator, will work with science professionals from around the country to promote excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning to parents and teachers of elementary school students. As a member of the Science Matters advisory board, Buchanan will provide advice and input to the NSTA board of directors and staff responsible for Science Matters programs and endeavors.

Chaney, a National Board Certified Teacher in Science, will work with other members of the Science Scope advisory board to review manuscripts for inclusion in the NSTA publication and make recommendations to the editor concerning publication of the manuscripts.

She will also assist the editor in implementing publication policies and provide suggestions for future publication topics. This is not the first time Chaney has served at the national level for NSTA. She served three years on the Professional Development Committee and three years on the High School Committee.

UALRTeach is an innovative teacher preparation program designed to strengthen STEM-teacher education. UALRTeach’s goals are recruiting, training, and increasing retention of science, technology, engineering, and math teachers; to increase the number and diversity of students seeking teacher certification; and to develop these students into teacher-leaders in their respective disciplines.
