Special guests celebrate King on UALR campus
The Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Commission has lined up numerous guests for a free Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock campus.
Mega Kingfest kicks off Monday morning, Jan. 18, in the Jack Stephens Center and is open to the public.
Highlights include keynote speaker Arun Gandhi, grandson of the late Mohandas Gandhi, and a family comedy show featuring actor and comedian Marlon Wayans.
At 7 a.m., an annual interfaith prayer breakfast will be held with keynote speaker Presiding Elder Lee Thompson of Lakeland, Florida.
Gov. Asa Hutchinson will provide King Day reflections during the breakfast. Commemorative musical selections will be provided by Arkansas native DC Washington and gospel recording artist Melvin Williams of the Williams Brothers. The gospel group has received six Grammy nominations.
At 9:30 a.m. a “Day of Service” celebratory event will feature Arun Gandhi, South African native and grandson of world-renowned advocate of nonviolence, Mahatma Gandhi, as the event’s keynote speaker.
Daytime television actor Eric Braeden, best known for his role in “The Young and the Restless” will be returning to the event as the master of ceremonies.
A Birthday Bash and Non-violence Youth Summit will be held 12:30 p.m following the Day of Service activities. This opportunity allows the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission to partner with different schools to teach youths about community service and King.
During the Nonviolence Youth Summit and MLK Birthday Bash, a family comedy show will be held featuring Marlon Wayans, actor, producer, comedian, writer, and director.
