UALR’s Office of Campus Life, in partnership with the nonprofit organization Not For Sale, is sponsoring three programs Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 26 and 27, to raise awareness of human trafficking and modern-day slavery.
Shand Laughlin, regional recruiter for the Peace Corps, will be on campus to inform students about the organization and how to volunteer. The information session will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, in the Leadership Lounge on the second floor of the Donaghey Student Center, across the hall from the Office of Campus Life.
Mexican historian and author Enrique Krauze, one of the world’s leading visionaries on Mexico’s political future, will present the Winthrop Rockefeller Distinguished Lecture at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at UALR’s University Theatre.

Students planning on graduating this fall should stop by Fall Grad Fest from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 13 and 14, in the lower concourse of the Donaghey Student Center.
American and international students are invited to the UALR International Mixer at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, to meet and greet each other in a social venue.
“We will be signing up students interested in joining a new UALR International Student Association, which is open to all UALR students,” said Dr. Jacek Lubecki, associate professor of political science and sponsor of the student association. “We will also be holding elections for student officers. All UALR students and faculty are welcome to attend.”
Refreshments and Middle Eastern food will be served free of charge. Students should RSVP by Wednesday, Oct. 13, to help with estimates of food needs.
“But if folks don’t reserve in time, that doesn’t mean they cannot attend,” Lubecki said.
The event is hosted by the Office of International Services, the International Studies Program, and the Middle Eastern Studies Program.
UALR organizations, departments, and offices are invited to compete in Third Annual Chili Cookoff from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, in Ledbetter Hall A, B, and C in the Donaghey Student Center. Entry fees are $10 for each four-person team. All proceeds benefiting the American Humanics Association.
A panel discussion on Arizona’s Senate Bill 1070, the state’s controversial new strict immigration law, and other states attempts to copy it is the final event in UALR’s Hispanic Heritage Month 2010 activities.

Paul Vitale, a nationally renowned author, speaker, and trainer, will speak from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, in Ledbetter Hall C in the Donaghey Student Center. It is part of The Office of Campus Life’s “Orientation Checkpoints: Finding Your Way” 2010-2011 series. Admission is free, and box lunches will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Dr. Mohammed Moursi, a vascular surgeon at UAMS, will give a brief explanation of Ramadan, following an iftar, a traditional dinner that ends the day of fasting during Ramadan at UALR’s Think Fast: Interfaith Iftar and Food Drive beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, in Ledbetter Hall in the Donaghey Student Center.
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until dusk and engage in charitable acts. Dr. Clea Bunch, chair of UALR’s Middle Eastern Studies program, said the discussion and dinner are free and open to the public.
“We invite members of the community to participate in these traditions by fasting for all or part of the day, if they choose, and and donating non-perishable foods to our food drive,” Bunch said.
