Dr. Mohammed Moursi, a vascular surgeon at UAMS, will give a brief explanation of Ramadan, at at UALR’s “Think Fast: Interfaith Iftar and Food Drive, 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 in Ledbetter Hall in UALR’s Donaghey Student Center.
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until dusk, when they join family and friends for an iftar, is a traditional dinner that ends the day of fasting during Ramadan, and engage in charitable acts.
Dr. Clea Bunch, chair of UALR’s Middle Eastern Studies program, said the discussion and dinner is free and open to the public.
“We invite members of the community to participate in these traditions by fasting for all or part of the day, if they choose, and and donating non-perishable foods to our food drive,” Bunch said.

UALR professors with strong ties to Egypt and the Middle East will comment on what the future may hold for the country and its effect on the U.S. in a panel discussion at noon Friday, Feb. 25.
The event, postponed on Feb. 4 because of winter weather, is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Middle Eastern Studies Program.
Note: Due to inclement weather, the panel discussion on the future of Egypt will be postponed until further notice.
UALR professors with strong ties to the Middle East will discuss what the future may hold for Egypt and how the turmoil might affect the United States.
The panel discussion will be held in the Student Government Association Lounge on the second floor of the Donaghey Student Center at noon Friday, Feb. 4.
UALR’s non-credit classes in Arabic begin on Wednesday, Feb. 9. The classes are open to the public at a cost of $100 for the semester.
Dr. Kamran Iqbal, UALR professor of Systems Engineering and recipient of the Middle Eastern Studies Faculty Award, will be giving a talk on Syria at noon t 1:30 p.m. today, Sept. 15, in Room D of the Donaghey Student Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

DSC Room 201R has been reserved from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day during Ramadan as a quiet space for students.
Dr. Tom Tudor, professor of management, has been awarded a $2,500 UALR Middle Eastern Studies grant to research how to better attract Muslim customers into the U.S. banking system. Dr. Tudor has published 35 research publications throughout his career and has received more than $45,000 in grants to support his research.
UALR’s Middle Eastern Studies Program presents a three-day film festival from 1:40 to 9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, Feb. 22 to 24 in Ledbetter Hall A in the Donaghey Student Center.
