Dr. Jan Austin, director of UALR’s Office of Campus Life, accepted a plaque of appreciation from the Arkansas Foodbank at its annual meeting Thursday, Oct. 27, on behalf of several university organizations working to alleviate hunger in central Arkansas.
UALR Senior Gabriella Corriere, a strategic communication major with a minor in advertising, won the national Public Relations Society of America’s Silverman Award and the group’s Yoshimura Scholarship at the association’s annual conference in Orlando.
Rachel Hood of North Little Rock, a May 2011 graduate and the 2010-11 executive editor of the Forum, has been selected to be the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s first-ever web intern. She is one of several recent grads from the School of Mass Communication being snapped up for media jobs.
Christopher Cone, a UALR sophomore in media production with a minor in international studies, has received a Benjamin Gilman Scholarship and a Freeman Asia Scholarship for his UALR Study Abroad Exchange Program in Chengdu, China.

Israeli journalist Gil Hoffman, chief political correspondent and analyst for the Jerusalem Post, will present a lecture, “What the Future Holds: An Insider’s Look Middle East Politics,” at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 31, in UALR’s Engineering and Information Technology building auditorium.

Dr. Jamie Byrne, associate professor and director of the School of Mass Communication, has received the Appreciation Award from the Girl Scouts of America for her work on the organization’s Council Realignment Committee. The panel worked for more than a year to combine the five legacy councils — all their own corporations — into a single unit.
Dr. Tim Edwards, associate professor in the School of Mass Communications, has been named Mentor of the Year in the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program for successfully mentoring numerous students in the program for several years.
