Joel Dunlap fell in love with the restaurant business when he flipped his first hamburger at his McDonald’s job at the age of 14. Last fall, the Philadelphia native graduated magna cum laude from UALR with a major in marketing and went back to his first love.
Students, faculty, staff, and their families from the UALR School of Social Work will volunteer 150 hours of service from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy.
Dan Burden, considered the nation’s expert on walkability, will conduct a workshop and walking audit of the University District Monday, Jan. 9, and discuss how the area can be made safer for all modes of transportation, from walking to driving.

Neighborhood participants in a month-long effort to develop ideas for improving opportunities for children and youth outside the classroom will report their ideas from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at the Willie Hinton Neighborhood Resource Center at 3805 W. 12th St.

A newly renovated home in the Fair Park neighborhood is now up for sale by the University District Development Corp., which is offering eligible first-time homeowners a $20,000 subsidy for the down payment and closing costs.

UALR students in the residence village are providing spooky Halloween fun this week for children in the neighborhood surrounding the campus. From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, neighborhood kids can take pictures in their Halloween costumes in front of a spooky backdrop while waiting at a face painting station on the fifth floor of East Hall — the taller brick building in between two apartment buildings — at 36th Street and Fair Park Avenue.
