UA Little Rock’s School of Art and Design Unveils January Exhibitions
The School of Art and Design at UA Little Rock has announced its lineup of exhibitions opening in January 2025.
From digital explorations to small sculptures, the galleries offer a range of contemporary art experiences.
“Akemi Maegawa: Small Sculpture Series”
Starting Jan. 13 and running until March 20, the North and South Galleries will feature “Akemi Maegawa: Small Sculpture Series.”
“This series is a little bit of nostalgic celebration for me as an artist here, where I live, yet far away from home,” Maegawa, a Washington DC-based artist who is originally from Japan, said. “I cannot let you touch or eat my Wagashi-like small sculptures, but hopefully, everyone can find something interesting, eye-pleasing, enjoyable, and even ‘tasty’ while looking at them.”
“38th Annual Small Works on Paper”
The Ann Maners and Alex Pappas Gallery will host the “38th Annual Small Works on Paper” exhibition. The touring, juried event showcases two-dimensional works no larger than 18 x 24 inches that are created by Arkansas-based artists.
The exhibition will run from Jan. 13 to Feb. 16. The reception, scheduled for 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2025 in the Windgate Center of Art + Design, will serve as the premiere of the statewide exhibition.
“Clive Holden: The Digital Age”
The Focus Gallery will showcase the work of Clive Holden, a renowned new media artist, filmmaker, and poet. “Clive Holden: The Digital Age,” which runs from Jan. 16 to March 21, will delve into how time impacts memory and geography.
“Iris Eichenberg: lighter than the childhood home”
From Jan. 16 to March 9, the Brad Cushman Gallery will host “Iris Eichenberg: lighter than the childhood home.” A German-born artist, Eichenberg has been an Artist-in-Residence and the head of the Metalsmithing Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art since 2006.
Eichenberg is scheduled to speak at UA Little Rock at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6 in the Windgate Center of Art + Design. A reception will immediately follow.
“Kopfkino: Drawings by David Bailin”
In the newly reopened Gallery One in the Fine Arts building, “Kopfkino: Drawings by David Bailin” will be on display from Jan. 16 to March 14. With a background in art education and a long career in Arkansas, Bailin’s large-scale works on paper have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Grand Award at the 56th Annual Delta Exhibition at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts.
“When taken together, this lineup is a snapshot of contemporary art as seen through the many fields of instruction at the School of Art and Design: photography, metalsmithing, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and so on,” said Brian Young, the gallery director in the School of Art and Design.
UA Little Rock galleries are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. The galleries in the Windgate Center of Art + Design have additional hours on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All UA Little Rock galleries are closed on university holidays.
