Mohammad Goodarzi, Ph.D.
- Assistant Professor of Chemistry
- Expertise
Dr. Mohammad Goodarzi earned his Ph.D. from Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium, specializing in drug design and discovery, with a primary emphasis on diseases characterized by shared fundamental pathways in their progression, e.g. HIV infection and cancer. He joined Katholieke Universiteit Leuven as a postdoctoral researcher, where he played a critical role in European projects centered around mastering experimental design and statistical modeling. He contributed to the development of a non-destructive sensor for measuring glucose using goat animal models, ultimately advancing diabetes management for patients.
After a few years, Goodarzi made a transition to the Laimburg Research Center in Italy, where he dedicated his work to metabolomics and engaged in intriguing projects involving Drosophila Suzuki. After acquiring extensive knowledge across various OMICS disciplines and building a robust foundation in drug discovery, Goodarzi felt the need to bridge these diverse aspects. This pursuit led him to join UT Southwestern, where Goodarzi served as an instructor for seven years. During that time, his focus was centered on unraveling drug mechanisms of action and particularly studying autophagy regulation.
As a biochemist, Goodarzi’s academic journey includes co-authoring over 100 scientific publications, achieving an H-index of 41, and receiving international chemistry competition with bronze and silver medals in 2006 and 2007 from Malaysia and Switzerland, respectively. Additionally, Goodarzi contributes as an editorial member to three esteemed journals within his field.
