A message from the Interim Vice Provost for Research and Dean of Graduate School

Dr. Abhijit Bhattacharyya

The students, faculty and staff at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock are engaged in a wide variety of exceptional research and creative activities. Observing the unique and ambitious scholarly activity from the arts, humanities, social sciences, physical and the natural sciences, engineering, education, and information technology disciplines has given me great hope for the future of our institution and its impact on the region. Faculty and staff are leading efforts on projects as diverse as the quest for clean water, cybersecurity, energy storage, social work in the community, compassion research, social media research, environmental factors on recidivism (repeat offenses) in the community, and the very important contribution of archivists and historians in digitizing history for future generations. These are some of the exciting projects that are underway. Led by passionate faculty, students frequently work both in their area of study and in interdisciplinary collaborations with students and professors from across campus. These research and creative activities are supported by funding from internal, private, state, and federal sources. Sponsors include the Arkansas Department of Education, Arkansas Highway Transportation Department, National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Department of Education, Department of Justice, National Institutes of Health, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Harris Foundation.

We are especially proud to showcase the research and creative activity of the students at the UA Little Rock Student Research and Creative Works Expo, an annual event that allows student researchers to showcase their research and creative projects to the campus community. I was especially delighted that the Research and Creative Works Committee led the effort during 2016-2017 to pilot several “exploratory presentations,” such as a digital humanities hub and a concrete canoe display, in preparation for a more diverse and expanded expo format for future years.

As we move forward as an institution, I look forward to being part of a collective effort to continue the pursuit of innovative research opportunities and collaborations while engaging students to propel them into the future. I invite you to visit our campus to experience first-hand the research and creative activity that is occurring in your area of interest.
