The minor in Spanish offers you the opportunity to develop your Spanish language skills and your cultural awareness so that you can use what you learn in your community and in your workplace. It consists of 18 hours above the 1000 level, completed in 3 blocks. Fifteen hours must be in upper-level courses, with at least three hours at the 4000 level as specified below.
If you have prior experience with Spanish, you will need to complete the WebCAPE exam via the Office of Testing Services before registering to determine your language proficiency and course placement.
Study abroad and community engagement are encouraged as part of the minor requirements.
Course Sequence
Blocks for the Spanish minor must be completed in order and with a grade of C or better in order to proceed to the next block.
Block 1 (3 hours)
- SPAN 2311: Intermediate Spanish (or equivalent proficiency)*
Block 2 (6 hours)
- SPAN 3313: Conversation and Presentation
- SPAN 3314: Spanish for Writing
Block 3 (9 hours)
- SPAN 3xxx (3000-level course elective)**
- SPAN 3xxx (3000-level course elective)**
- SPAN 4xxx (4000-level course elective)**
* If you have no previous experience with Spanish, you must complete the following two prerequisites before taking SPAN 2311: SPAN 1311 (Elementary Spanish 1) and SPAN 1312 (Elementary Spanish 2). SPAN 1311, 1312 and 2311 must be taken in sequence one term at a time.
** Can be substituted by Spanish language transfer or study abroad credit
