artWORKS Workshop with Melissa Gill

April 12 at 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Workshop:

Friday, April 12, noon — 4:00 PM, UALR Campus Garden

Melissa Gill is a professor of drawing and printmaking at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas since 2008. Inspired by Eastern philosophy, her work uses imagery from nature and patterning as a metaphor for the spiritual journey.  To construct her work she combines fiber art techniques of dyeing and stitching with relief and intaglio printmaking, and collage. She holds an MFA from IU Bloomington, an MA from Purdue University, and a BFA from the University of Arizona.

Details:

In this fun workshop, Professor Melissa Gill will introduce how to dye fabric a beautiful blue with the indigo plant. Students will learn the traditional Japanese method of dyeing called “Shibori,” which uses a combination of folding and clamping to partially resist the dye and create an endless variety of patterns on fabric.

This lecture and workshop are presented in conjunction with the Art in the Garden series, funded in part by a UA Little Rock Sustainability Grant. Additionally, this lecture and workshop are made possible by the generous support of the Windgate Foundation.
