April 23 at 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

Please join us for the annual Hesburgh Lecture, presented by the Notre Dame Club of Arkansas and the University History Institute, at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, April 23, at the Historic Arkansas Museum:

Dr. John Deak (University of Notre Dame)
A Death in Davos: A Case of Honor (and Homicide) in Europe before the First World War

In March 1909, in a hotel in Davos, Switzerland, an Austro-Hungarian army officer shot dead a Dutch composer in front of all the other guests. An investigation followed in which the police discovered a real murder mystery in which the only thing for certain was the victim and the killer. Dr. Deak will discuss this case and, in the process, take us on an exploration of the cult of honor and the peculiar world of Davos in Europe on the eve of the First World War.
