The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) uses reflection and evidence-based methods to research effective teaching and student learning. Tensions arise when the methods of inquiry to investigate teaching and learning are inconsistent with disciplinary methods of inquiry. For example, STEM disciplines often rely on appropriate metrics with calibrated instruments to measure them and emphasize closely controlled experiments to isolate causal variables; all within well-defined systems.
