Spring 2021 Speaker: “Unequal Profession: Race and Gender in Legal Academia” with Dr. Meera Deo

March 29, 2021 at 12:05 pm - 1:05 pm

Professor Meera E. Deo will discuss her book, Unequal Profession: Race and Gender in Legal Academia (Stanford University Press, 2019). The book draws from her landmark Diversity in Legal Academia (DLA) project, the first formal empirical study to investigate raceXgender challenges and opportunities facing law professors in their personal and professional lives. The book not only exposes ongoing biases, but also reveals individual strategies and
structural solutions to maximize success.

All faculty are encouraged and invited to attend. This event will earn you 10 points toward your next ATLE award.

Please, RSVP by filling in this online form.

Meera E Deo, JD, PhD, is Director of the Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE), Professor of Law at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, and the William H. Neukom Fellows Research Chair in Diversity and Law at the American Bar Foundation. Her research merges jurisprudence with empirical methods to interrogate institutional diversity, affirmative action, and racial representation. Professor Deo’s book, Unequal Profession: Race and Gender in Legal Academia (Stanford University Press, 2019), draws from her landmark Diversity in Legal Academia project, which examines how the intersection of raceXgender affect interactions with faculty and students, tenure and promotion, work/life balance, and other aspects of the law faculty experience. One current empirical research project investigates COVID-19 effects on diversity, equity, and inclusion in legal academia,
especially for women faculty; another work-in-progress considers how empirical data can inspire improvements to contemporary affirmative action policies. The National Science Foundation (NSF), Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship, AccessLex Institute, Wolters Kluwer, and others have supported her groundbreaking research. In 2020, she was elected to the American Law Institute. Professor Deo has served as a Senate-appointed member of the California Commission on Access to Justice, an empirical research consultant to the ACLU of Southern California and the Law School Admission Council (LSAC), and Chair of the AALS Section on Law and the Social Sciences.
