Human Chain to Support Quota Reform Student Protest in Bangladesh

July 23at 8:00 pm - 8:40 pm

The ongoing quota reform movement in Bangladesh is a significant and complex issue, driven primarily by university students who are protesting the government’s decision of reinstating the quota system for government jobs. This system reserves a 56%-85% of government jobs for specific groups, including freedom fighters, their children and grandchildren, women, ethnic minorities, and people from remote districts. The initial aim was to counter historical. . disadvantages faced by these groups right after 1971.. . The recent quota reform protests in Bangladesh have turned deadly, resulting in the closure of all educational institutions. The protests, led by university students, demand the abolition of the quota system in government jobs, arguing it is discriminatory and hampers merit-based recruitment.. . Since early July 2024, students have been demonstrating their protests across various campuses. The situation escalated after the Supreme Court upheld a High Court ruling to reinstate the quota system. The government using Police, Border Guard, RAB, SWAT forces against the protesters, leading to violent clashes. As of 19th July 2024 several students, have died, and thousands have been injured. The deaths occurred all over the country including Dhaka, Chattogram and Rangpur division during confrontations between general students, Bangladesh Student’s League(student wing of ruling party) activists, and the police forces. The Ministry of Education closed all educational institutions indefinitely. The international media has widely covered the protests, highlighting the severe suppression by the police and the demands of the students for a fairer recruitment process. Despite the violence, the students have continued their protests, calling for a more equitable system to replace the current quotas.. . We, The Bangladeshi Students Organization at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, stand with the student protestors in Bangladesh and condemn the violence brought upon them by the law instruments and the BCL.. . The Bangladeshi Students Organization (BSO) at UA Little Rock, calls for a peaceful human chain on campus to express our solidarity and support to the ongoing quota reform student protest in Bangladesh. We believe that the ongoing student protest in Bangladesh against the unfair quota discrimination in jobs is logical by all means and must be reformed to establish fairness in the Bangladeshi job market. Remarks: There will be no political quotes, no speeches, and no one will wear any dress that reflects the UALR logo. There will be some placards written in Bengali and English with words supporting the anti-quota protest.
