Cappy Counard makes jewelry and sculptural objects that reflect her curiosity about relationship. By exploring the notions of work, care, storytelling, and repair, she aims to record our capacity for evolution and connection. Cappy graduated with an MFA from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and a BS in Art from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She lives in Edinboro, Pennsylvania where she has been a Professor of Metals and Jewelry at Penn West Edinboro (formerly Edinboro University) for more than twenty years. Teaching is as integral to her practice as making. The act of building community and sharing knowledge contributes greatly to the concepts in her work.

Workshop details:

In this workshop we’ll explore the essential nature of objects and materials to create both conceptual and technical possibilities. Conceptually we’ll consider the objects you are drawn to and collect. We’ll discuss their prominent qualities, the meaning, or memories they hold and how this can be reflected in your aesthetic. Technically we’ll investigate one of metal’s most fascinating innate qualities, malleability. Together we’ll examine its unique ability to transform from sheet and wire into myriad shapes, and forms. The technique of chasing and repousse will enable us to create volume and “draw” three dimensionally, while forging teaches us about altering mass and line.
