Three National Sororities to Join UALR’s Panhellenic Council

Three national sororities are planning to establish chapters at UALR in the fall. Kappa Delta, Gamma Phi Beta, and Sigma Sigma Sigma will join the already established Chi Omega to form the UALR College Panhellenic Council.

“The colonization of three new sororities serves to strengthen the role of sororities and fraternities on campus, which is a goal of the University’s strategic plan, UALR Fast Forward, established in 2006,” said Dr. Charles Donaldson, vice chancellor of educational and student services.

Members of Chi Omega’s national governing council began last fall talking with the three organizations about the possibilities of establishing chapters at UALR. In January, UALR formally invited the sororities to colonize.

“Members of each sorority’s international governing council visited UALR in March to learn about the institution, meet with campus administrators and local alumni, and discussed colonization efforts,” Donaldson said. “The organizations are excited about colonizing at UALR and look forward to contributing to life on campus. The newly formed UALR Panhellenic Council will begin membership selection with a recruitment period in September. All interested individuals are invited to participate.”

The sororities invited to come to UALR have a long and rich history. Kappa Delta was founded in 1897 at what was the State Female Normal School in Farmwood, Va. The sorority’s goal is “to promote true friendship among the college girls of our country by inculcating into their hearts and lives those principles of truth, of honor, of duty, without which there can be no true friendship.”

Four women founded Gamma Phi Beta in 1874 at Syracuse University. Its members are “prepared to be leaders, believe in philanthropy, and help young girls be committed to personal academic excellence and value lifelong membership.”

Sigma Sigma Sigma – known as Tri Sigma – was founded in 1898, also at Longwood University. Its members are “committed to their values of wisdom, power, faith, hope, and love.”
