Dr. Joe Whitesell, professor of biology at UALR in the 1970s, has died following a lengthy battle against lung cancer. He was 73.

A native of Clearwater, Fla., Whitesell earned a Bachelor of Science degree in ornamental horticulture at Auburn University. He earned a Master of Science degree in botany and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida in Gainesville.
