UALR Celebrates Sustainability Day Oct. 21
The campus celebrates “green’’ on Wednesday, Oct. 21, with activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Donaghey Student Center’s Ledbetter Hall Rooms A, B, and C, sponsored by the UALR Committee on Sustainability.
At 11:30 a.m. in Ledbetter Hall A, UALR Chancellor Joel E. Anderson will announce the contest winners of the month-long recycling competition between resident halls’ floors. The contest will determine which floor’s residents collected the most recyclable material during the month.
A Green Jobs Fair will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in Ledbetter Halls B and C, and a Nationwide Webcast on Sustainability Strategies for campus Communities will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Ledbetter Hall Room A.
Throughout the day, UALR’s food service vendor, Sodexo, will serve “plus fair trade” coffee, and information about local organic food will be available throughout the morning.
Offering tips to reduce one’s carbon footprint at home and work, the Sustainability Committee suggests:
- Call the local recycling center to determine what types of materials they accept, if curbside pick-up is available, and if they provide recycling bins. If no curb-side is available, take recyclables to the nearest center.
- Use compact fluorescent lamps. You can lower your lighting bill by converting to energy-efficient low-wattage compact fluorescent lighting and fixtures.
- Locate the recycling bins in the office, department, or building to determine what types of materials are being accepted. UALR recycles all types of paper, aluminum cans and plastic bottles from each building, but each person consuming those types of materials must be responsible for sorting and disposing of in the correct recycling bin.
Put computer monitors to sleep when not in use for more than 10 minutes. Monitors are responsible for more than one third of a computer’s energy consumption.
