Wash. U. Prof Discusses “Self” at Socratic Society Meet

John Doris, associate professor of philosophy at Washington University in St. Louis, will present a lecture titled “A Natural History of the Self” at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 23, at Dickinson Hall Auditorium sponsored by UALR’s Socratic Society. A reception will follow the lecture.

An author and essayist, Doris works at the intersection of psychology and philosophy.

His last book, “Lack of Character,” drew on experiments in social psychology to cast doubt on the presuppositions concerning character and personality in Aristotle’s ethics.

In his recent work, he examines studies concerning subconscious cognition to test the extent to which we exert rational control over our behavior. Through this work, he aims to redefine what it is to be an agent. His presentation this Friday will address these issues.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 501-569-3312.
