Three Students Picked for Washington Center Internships
Three UALR students have been selected for internships this summer by The Washington Center, the largest independent, nonprofit academic internship program in the country. Founded 35 years ago, The Washington Center’s mission is to build future leaders by instilling in all program participants the need to be well-informed, public-spirited, and socially engaged leaders.
The three students selected are:
- Michael Jolley of Batesville, majoring in computer science
- Jamilla Brown of Little Rock, majoring in art history
- Jennifer Guzman of Alexander, majoring in international studies
They join a growing cadre of UALR students who have interned at sites such as the Navy Criminal Investigation Center, the Navy Museum, the Internal Revenue Service, Department of Defense, Walter Reed Military Hospital, InterFaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington, National Council of State Legislatures, Leadership for Africa USA, and Women Empowered Against Violence.
The state of Arkansas is providing each student a stipend of $6,000 to help defray the tuition costs. The university then forwards the tuition fees the students pay toward meeting the hefty cost of the internship.
“I am very proud of UALR for this. Not all schools do that. And not many states offer the subsidy that Arkansas does” said Dr. Elisabeth Sherwin, professor of psychology who coordinates UALR’s participation in The Washington Center’s program.
“UALR has built up an impressive roster of interns in a very short period of time. I hope this continues, and I look forward to seeing students from all of UALR’s colleges compete for the subsidies we are awarded.”
The preliminary requirements include at least a 2.7 grade point average, Arkansas residency, and at least 45 credits completed.
