Annual Stroll to Inspect Lighting, Phones

The jack-o’-lanterns are carved, and Daylight Saving Time is about to end. That means it is time for UALR’s annual evening stroll through campus to inspect lights and find shadowy areas that need illumination.

“We always invite the UALR community, especially students, to walk with us,” said Dave Millay, associate vice chancellor for Facilities Management.

Wednesday, Nov. 9, is the date for this year’s “Exterior Lighting Walk of Campus,” and students, faculty, and staff are invited to take part. To join the inspection, contact John McMains, assistant director for campus planning and capital construction, at jpmcmains@ualr.edu.

McMains will lead the effort this year with a core group that will include Millay, Department of Public Safety Chief Brad King and some of his officers; Electric Shop Supervisor Benny Stringfellow and several of his fellow electricians; Assistant Director of Housing Randy Henslee, Customer Service Manager for Entergy Arkansas Paul Brewster, and Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration Bob Adams.

The group will assemble at 5:30 p.m. in the conference room of the Facilities Management Building, room FM 205. Volunteers will be divided into groups and assigned to one of the core leaders. The group will fan out across campus with maps, flashlights, marking tape, and other supplies to take note of:

  • Lights that are out
  • Lights that are flickering or “strobing”
  • Lights that are obscured by trees and shrubs
  • Dark areas where additional lighting might be appropriate
  • Any other conditions of concern relative to campus safety

The teams will mark any needed repairs and adjustments during the tour. They also will be testing the 84 emergency “blue light” telephones and reporting their status.

“At the end of the evening, McMains will conduct a debriefing of group leaders and answer any questions,” Millay said.
