UALR’s Department of Philosophy and Liberal Studies and the Socratic Society present “How Kind and Caring Ethicists Talked Me Right Into Pessimism,” a talk by Dr. Kathryn Norlock of Trent University at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 6, in the UALR Donaghey Student Center, meeting room G.

Norlock, the Kenneth Mark Drain Endowed Chair in Ethics and professor of philosophy at Trent University, earned her Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 2001, and her B.A. degree in political science from Northern Illinois University. Norlock lectures on sociopolitical issues, ethics, and feminist and environmental philosophy.

The talk will cover Norlock’s view on the adaptation of pessimism, an outline of what evils are and how pessimism relates to them, discerning pessimism from non-ideal theory, and discussion of non-ideal theorists’ distinctive account of moral practice in the absence of hope.
