The UALR Department of Music will present Dr. Norman Boehm, director of the piano program at Hendrix College, in piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

As a pianist, Boehm specializes in music from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and most often plays neglected masters of piano composition such as John Ireland and Eric Korngold.

He frequently transcribes orchestral works for the piano. Boehm is also a conductor and arranger who has created chamber orchestra versions of symphonies by Bruckner and Mahler.

“Boehm will also perform something traditional (Mozart) in a way that is historically accurate,” said Dr. Robert Boury, UALR professor of music. “When Mozart played repeats in his music, he often improvised ornaments in the second playing. The program also features original transcriptions of orchestral works by Delius and Wagner as well as the fiercely difficult music of Russian jazz pianist and classical composer Nikolai Kapustin.”
