The Department of Theatre Arts will present the apocalyptic fantasy, “Boom,” a play by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb, starting at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Haislip Theatre in the Center for the Performing Arts.

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20 through Saturday, Feb. 23, and two matinees will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24.

“Boom” begins when a graduate student’s online personal ad, ‘Sex to Change the Course of the World,’ lures a mysterious journalism student to a subterranean research lab.

“When a major global catastrophic event strikes the planet, their date takes on evolutionary significance and the fate of humanity hangs in the balance,” said Jay Raphael, theatre arts and dance chair. “Will they survive? What about the fish in the tank? And who is that woman pulling levers and playing the timpani?”

“This is an epic and intimate comedy that spans over billions of years and explores the influences of fate versus randomness in the course of one’s life, as well as life as we know it on the planet. This is one end-of-the-world story that will leave you grinning from ear to ear,” he said.
