Chemistry Scholars to Present at National Meeting

Eleven students and six faculty will head to New Orleans Monday, April 8, for the American Chemical Society National Meeting where they will present on topics ranging from nanotechnology to coal combustion.

Twice a year, the UALR chemistry department faculty and other UALR faculty attend the National American Chemical Society (ACS) meeting. Faculty apply to present at the meeting and others are invited.

The faculty presenting at the April meeting are: Dr. Jerry A. Darsey, Dr. Robert E. Belford, Dr. Mariya V Khodakovskaya, Dr. Laura S. Ruhl, and Charles Hathaway.

ACS has a student chapter at UALR. Students within the UALR ACS Club and other undergraduate researchers apply to present talks and participate in the spring meeting. This is an opportunity for them to meet other high level chemists in their field and also allows them to explore possible graduate school opportunities.

Undergrad and ACS Club Officer Andrew Cornell will present at the national meeting and said it is an honor.

“This trip will allow for the opportunity to interact with ACS Student Chapters and chemists from all over the world. It is a chance to represent my school and department with the world’s largest scientific society,” he said. “I plan to use all of my time attending presentations and supporting the UALR faculty and my fellow classmates.”

The other UALR student presenters are: Michael A. Bauer, Lisa M. Orr,  Gunawan Gunawan, Udaya Bhasker Nasini, Joshua A Moore, Jennifer A. Hill, Venu Gopal Bairi, Amy M. Alexander-LeCroy, Carson De-Priest, Sunil Kumar Ramasahayam, and Steven E. Baker.

ACS is the largest scientific society in the world.
