UALR’s Department of History professor, Dr. Susanah Shaw Romney, will have her manuscript, “New Netherland Connections: Intimate Networks and Atlantic Ties in Seventeenth-Century America” published by University of North Carolina Press next spring.

The UNC Press is among the first of its kind in the nation and has earned national and international recognition for the quality of its publications. Romney’s forthcoming book is being published as part of the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture series.

The manuscript also recently earned the Jamestown Prize, awarded every two years to “an exceptional book-length manuscript pertaining to the histories and cultures of North America from circa 1450 to 1820.”

The prize was given during the annual Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture conference, which was held at Johns Hopkins University in June. The Omohundro is the premier organization for Early American studies and affiliated with the College of William and Mary and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Romney completed her undergraduate work in history at University of California-Santa Cruz and received her doctorate from Cornell University.

Her research focuses on gender, race, and the fur trade in the 17th-century Dutch colony that later became New York. Her research has taken her from the Huntington Library in California, to the Gemeente Archief in Amsterdam, to the Western Cape Archives in South Africa.

Romney offers classes at UALR on the colonial period, slavery, the frontier, gender, and other topics.
